ICLD is helping to promote local democracy in developing countries participating in the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency’s (Sida) cooperation programme. We aim to utilise and build on the experience and know-how of Swedish municipalities and regions, and also research and knowledge development in an international context concerning local democracy and local self-government.
ICLD’s operations are financed by Sida and cover three main areas:
The Centre of Knowledge provides a research network and a meeting place ICLD Forum for Swedish and international participants working with local democracy and decentralization.
The goal is to strengthen local democracy and local self-government in the relevant partner countries in order to reduce poverty and help to establish just and sustainable development.
Training programmes are designed to establish the prerequisites for partner countries and other developing countries to reduce poverty as a result of effective initiatives for the development of capacity and institutions. These programmes give key persons in developing countries an opportunity to study Swedish experience, models and expertise.
